NVIDIA has now implemented its new power connector design for RTX 4090 Founders Edition, Redditor finds.

It appears that NVIDIA is in the process of updating their Founder Edition cards with a new and improved ’12VHPWR’ connector design. While the complete implementation details are not yet known, it has been discovered that NVIDIA has already utilized this connector on their RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti cards, which are part of the RTX 40 series. This may not be the full implementation of the 12V-2×6 connector, though.

Although NVIDIA has not officially announced any changes to the power connector, the existence of the new design came to light after reports surfaced about the company working on a new connector. One notable difference in the new design is the inclusion of shortened sense pins. These pins have been reduced in length, effectively eliminating the GPU’s ability to communicate and negotiate with the power supply for higher wattage unless the cable is fully inserted. This modification helps prevent situations where high power is forced through a cable that is not fully seated.

The latest reports suggest that NVIDIA has incorporated this new connector design in the RTX 4090 Founders Edition, the first desktop GPU of this generation to feature the 12+4pin design. This minor alteration is expected to reduce the likelihood of the connector operating in unsupported conditions, such as when a cable is not fully seated and could potentially lead to melting or other issues.
