Cozumel, Q.R. — The project to install over 30 kilometers of new electric cable to the island of Cozumel is expected to begin next month. Governor Mara Lezama says the installation is set to begin at the beginning of September.

She says the installation of the 30-plus kilometers of electric cable from the mainland at Chankaanab to the island of Cozumel will significantly improve the island’s supply of power.

The Playa del Carmen-Chankanaab transmission line project to the island is expected to cost around 750 million pesos, which has already been managed by the state administration.

Lezama said it will be next week when the state government, who is in charge of the project, will publish the corresponding call for tenders to interested companies.

“The plan is that with this work complete, the island will no longer suffer from electricity failures. The project will also satisfy the island’s future energy demand given the growth of the island,” she said.

The project will be completed in three sections that will include both underground and underwater electric cable installations.

Lezama explained that the winning company is expected to be announced by August 31 and work to begin September 1. The new submarine lines to Cozumel are set for completion in November of this year.
